kindly lent me his Wacom A5 (7x11) Intuos 3 for a week or two.
And as you can imagine I descended upon it like an excited fat child in a diving for pudding splat off!

Drawing the picture in gray scale, using the slide strips to modify brush size and the function buttons to switch between foreground & background (in this case light grey and black) you are able to build quite a smooth face.
Admittedly there are many anatomical errors, but it was done over an hour or two without reference.
Once the grays are down you set a color layer over the top and add in tones and hues.
